Smile, the Nightmare Is Dissipating

We’ve given a body blow to 45, the xenophobic, racist, imbecilic, incoherent idiot that is president of my country!

For the first time in over a year, I can smile when I read the news. I know it’s unwise and unhealthy to take politics seriously, but with the 2016 election in the United States, I felt as if my entire value system had been crushed by monolithic hate. Like so many others, I’ve taken multiple actions since then, including researching and writing about various issues, contacting government politicians and officials, and felt as if all that only resulted in the proverbial banging my head against a brick wall.

But now I see that wall starting to crumble. Bravo to the voters in Virginia and New Jersey for their votes for humaneness and humanity, the opposite of 45’s agenda; to Maine voters for support for decent medical care; to Charlotte, NC voters for the election of Vi Lyles as Mayor (we have hopes for her); and to Philadelphia voters for electing Larry Krasner as district attorney. I’m sure there are other bright spots in the nightmare world that 45 brought us this past year.

Doann smiling with our guide in Bhutan pre-2016 election!

“The vote is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have.” John Lewis, civil rights leader and U.S. Representative from Georgia.

Let us remember that in the 2016 election Hilary Clinton won the popular vote with 65,844,610 votes, or 48.2% of the total vote; 45 received 62,979,636 votes, or 46.1% of the total vote, a difference of 2.86 million votes. See my blog from 2017/02/26, Issue: the Electoral College, Election Finance Reform, and Gerrymandering, if you find that fact depressing with the outcome that 45 is just that, our 45th president.
