Votesafe.org is an Elon Musk con/scam through his super PAC, America PAC. It’s another way for him to influence your vote with outright lies about Democratic candidates, gain useful information for Republican and MAGA election trolls, and, while he’s at it, make more $$ by selling your personal information.
If you need to check on your registration or look up voting information, go to your state’s VOTE.GOV, the nonpartisan League of Women Voter’s VOTE411.ORG. [Caveat: I belong to the LWV], or contact your County Clerk. These sites will not ask for personal information other than your selection of your voting state or district. They provide nonpartisan, reliable, helpful, and accurate registration and election information.
VoteSafe.org is anything but safe! It collects the following information:
- “First, middle, and last name
- Date of birth
- Full home address
- Email address
- Cell phone number
- IP address and location (This information is used to derive each user’s city, zip code, approximate longitude and latitude, time zone, and internet provider.)
- Browser, operating system, screen size and language of your device
- What website referred you to votesafe.org
- Every link you click
- Every page you look at
- Your voter registration status (This is derived from a voter file held by America PAC or its vendors — not the state’s actual records.)
- Your district and ballot (This is derived from Ballotpedia.)”

“Votesafe.org is currently configured to share your information with numerous partners and to let advertising companies comprehensively track you across websites, apps, and streaming services,” according to Popular Information’s post. As well, it is being hyped by META with misleading ads. From my personal research, Popular Information and it’s originator, Judd Legum, are legitimate, accurate, respected, and well-positioned to do the kind of research required for the information they publish.
Additionally, the Election Law Blog: the politics of law, the law of politics, by Richard L. Hasen, Ph.D., J.D., director of UCLA Law’s Safeguarding Democracy Project on 9/8/2026 repeats the Popular Information post, having verified its accuracy.
The New Republic on 9/8/2026 also repeated this story, “Elon Musk Spends Millions Tricking People Into Giving Up Personal Data.” They added information on the business partners with whom your information will be shared if you sign onto votesafe.org: “The business partners include Facebook, Google, X, an advertising firm called the Trade Desk, a tracking company named Increment Data, and Iterable, an email and text-massage marketing company, among others.”
