The Congressional August recess is the perfect opportunity to confront your Republican Senators and Representative with the basic fact that they represent YOU, NOT Donald Trump.
If you can do this in person, it is very powerful, especially if you go with other like-minded voters! If that’s not possible, call their closest office to you and ask when they’ll be holding Town Halls and open sessions in your area for their constituents to ask questions and find out exactly what they’ve done (or not) for YOU. If you can’t arrange an in-person meeting, please at least call their office and voice your displeasure with their voting record. Check out their websites first, remembering that they’ll be whitewashed to present a rosy picture of their ‘work’ (the use of ‘white’ and ‘rosy’ is intentional). If you have the time, check out what committees they’re on and focus some questions on that.
Ask them when they’re going to hold Trump accountable for ignoring the constitutional rights of Congress? What do they intend to do about the illegal Iran War, and so much else? Consider the negative impacts of the obviously misnamed Big Beautiful Budget Bill; consider what the increased prices of gas and groceries have cost you and your family; consider what has impacted you the most or makes you the maddest or most frightened about this regime. Let them know! They’re inaction is as responsible for this mess as Trump’s and his marionette Cabinet.
Pick a topic that is close to your heart, such as education, climate change, health and safety, corruption, the Epstein files, immigrants and refugees, LGBTQ+ rights, foreign policy, et al. There are myriad issues to choose from. For example, the current destruction of Head Start, a program with a proven track record! Notice in the Congressional calendar below, they’ll be out of session also in October, too. That’s common in an election year. What have they done for YOU this year. You’re the ones they work for. Demand something for your money. It’s our dollars that pay their salaries and all their benefits, not to mention the Iran War, which is costing billions.
I happen to have two Democratic Senators, one of whom is particularly hard-working, Senator Hickenlooper, and I have a fantastic Democratic Representative in Brittany Petersen! I am not contacting them, nor do I sign all the petitions that come my way for Congress because I already know how they’ll vote, and I’d rather have them working as much as they can across the aisle and getting their agendas in place as wasting time acknowledging obvious issues that we agree on. Likewise, if you’ve got a responsible Senator or Representative, just let them know they’ve got your support, but you don’t need to waste their time.
Otherwise, please, please take action, even if it’s just a quick phone call! Look at the headlines and be reminded just how important this is. WE are this country; the government works for US. Don’t let them forget that!
