For Intelligent, Inquisitive People

The Cruelty and Falsehoods of Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill

If this bill passes, 190 rural hospitals will close, federal spending on Medicaid will be reduced by a minimum of $600 billion over a decade, Medicaid enrollment will be reduced by approximately 10.3 million people according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), and different universities and think tanks estimate that an additional 25,000 to 51,000 Americans will die each year specifically as a result of this bill.

There are NO illegal immigrants on Medicaid. Medicaid users are working-class American citizens, approximately 65% have jobs; many who are not working are veterans with disabilities. Non-citizens are not eligible for Medicaid; citizenship has to be proven to the state where one is signing up for Medicaid.

The administration and Republicans supporting this act are lying.

My father had an expression that we all hated, but it’s appropriate now: “Let’s call a spade, a spade.” Here’s “the spade” of this bill: It will increase the deficit by > $1 trillion (CBO and independent analysts), take away health care and food access for millions of hard-working American citizens, and provide tax cuts that will primarily benefit the wealthiest Americans (CBO, multiple fact-checkers, and analysts). That’s the basics.

There’s more cruelty in the details, but what’s important right now is to get the truth out and to confront Republican Senators, as the next step is for the Senate to vote on the House-passed bill or work further on their own reconciliation bill.

LIES:

“We’re not doing any cutting of anything meaningful. The only thing we’re cutting is waste, fraud and abuse. With Medicaid, waste, fraud and abuse. There’s tremendous waste, fraud and abuse,” Mr. Trump, in remarks to reporters on May 20. NO, there is not tremendous waste, fraud, and abuse. Yes, you are cutting something meaningful, as mentioned above reduction to Medicaid of >$600 billion in a decade; loss of insurance by approximately 10.3 million people, among other atrocities.

“The One Big, Beautiful Bill also helps get our fiscal house in order by carrying out the largest deficit reduction in nearly 30 years with $1.6 trillion in mandatory savings,” Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, in a news conference last month. NO, the CBO estimates an increase >$1 trillion to the deficit.

“We are not cutting Medicaid in this package. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about this, Jake. The numbers of Americans who are affected are those that are entwined in our work to eliminate fraud, waste and abuse. So, what do I mean by that? You got more than 1.4 million illegal aliens on Medicaid,” Speaker Mike Johnson, in a CNN appearance last month. YES, you are cutting Medicaid, and NO, you do not have 1.4 million illegal aliens on Medicaid. There are no illegal aliens on federal Medicaid. According to the NY Times: “Fourteen states and the District of Columbia use their own funds to provide insurance for undocumented immigrant children in need of critical health care, and seven of those states also extend coverage to some adult immigrants like pregnant women. The House bill penalizes those 14 states and D.C. by reducing their share of federal Medicaid funding.”
