Be Inspired: Artists On What It Means To Make Good Trouble

Mary Verdi-Fletcher, the first professional wheelchair dancer in the U.S., founded the Dancing Wheels Company in Cleveland in 1980. Born with spina bifida, Mary wanted to offer others with disabilities full and equal access into the world of dance.  “Throughout history, individuals and groups stood up for equality and justice for their own race, gender, and disability. But today, we must stand united for the equality and justice of all humankind. ‘United we stand, divided we fall.’ At a time when allyship means we understand, support, and unite with others who may be different than us, but in many ways the same.”

Be Angry: Why You’re Paying High Prices for Eggs

Founded in 1957 in Jackson, MS by John R. Adams, Jr., Cal-Maine Foods, the largest egg producer in the US, is a public company trading on the NASDAQ, with the founder’s family holding a controlling interest. Acquiring multiple other companies over the years enabled the company to become the primary US egg producer. Their brands include: Egg-Land’s Best, Land O’Lakes, Farmhouse Eggs, 4-Grain, Sunups, and Sunny Meadow. Pre-avian flu, the company declared approximately $5 million in quarterly profits. Since the avian flu, and, most recently, their last quarter profits are $509 million. According to Barron’s, a financial and investment news source, “egg prices have come down lately as the bird flu alleviates and consumers cut their purchases, but the numbers can tick up anytime if the virus starts spreading again. Wall Street expects Cal-Maine’s earnings for fiscal 2025, which ends in May, to be $24.45 per share, more than four times the profits in the last fiscal year.” [Emphasis mine.]
