We all know about using your own shopping bags. I discovered, however, that some of my reusable shopping bags are really plastic! So be sure you use CLOTH. Many people use baskets, especially for shopping at Farmer’s Markets. Using your cloth bags regularly is a habit that can easily be developed. Keep them in your car. As soon as I unload mine at home, I put them back in my car with one on the front seat to remind me to take it in when I shop again! Through websites I found organic cotton produce and bulk food bags, which come in a variety of sizes, and the non-plastic, reusable and washable food wrap covers shown in the photo. I got both of these items through ETSY online. I live in a somewhat remote area, and there are no stores near me that sell such products, although buying them locally is certainly a better option. Even if you reuse the plastic bags too many stores want to give you, sooner or later they deteriorate and will end up ultimately as microplastics in your food!
Deplasticizing my kitchen (and my home) is a challenge, but I’m managing it, albeit gradually. I’m replacing plastic food storage containers with glass, that have glass covers too. Too many that I saw have plastic tops defeating the purpose. I keep a few plastic containers to use when I go out for a meal to take for my leftovers. I have to admit, I haven’t made that a “do-it-without-thinking” habit yet, but I’m working on it.
I welcome comments to this post for your ideas for deplasticizing our lives.
