Look at the context, and let the bloody media go after more serious issues, like Trump’s proposed appointments, their qualifications, if they exist, and why they are a danger to our society. Hunter Biden is NOT a danger to society.
First, if his name wasn’t Hunter Biden would he ever have been charged? Very unlikely on the gun charge, which we’ll look at first with a quote from Joyce Vance’s, “Civil Discourse,” Dec. 1, 2024. Ms. Vance is a Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Law, University of Alabama School of Law and was U. S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 2009 to 2017. “Civil Discourse” is her Substack email, which you can sign up for. She provides a legal interpretation of relevant events that a non-lawyer can understand. I highly recommend it: joycevance@substack.com
“The gun charge is possession of a firearm by someone who is a user of or addicted to illegal drugs. Absent aggravating facts, like evidence the person is a danger to the community, this type of charge is not usually brought. It’s easy to understand why. Almost 10% of Americans struggle with drug addiction, and many more use drugs. Prosecuting every one of them would force the Justice Department to abandon far more serious cases. Hunter Biden possessed a gun briefly and never used it in connection with violent crime. He’s been in recovery for more than five years. It’s not the kind of case that gets charged if your name is John Smith.”
“The tax case involves amounts Hunter Biden acknowledged he owed but said he didn’t pay while he was in the grips of addiction. He pled guilty to the charges. While people who fail to pay taxes are frequently charged under the same provision used for Hunter Biden, the argument here is that given the extenuating circumstance of his addiction and his sudden payment of amounts owed plus interest and penalties, the prosecution was unwarranted.”
Please note that he paid the taxes owed, plus penalties in 2021, BEFORE he was fully charged in 2024 in the ongoing case that started under Trump 1.0.
Why the timing is important: the Kash Patel FBI Director announcement by president-elect Trump.
“The big reason why Hunter’s pardon is justified in my view is one none of Joe’s critics are talking about – the nomination of Kash Patel as FBI Director, who has pledged hundreds of times to go after the Biden family when Trump takes office.” Ron Filipkowski, is the Editor-in-Chief of MeidasTouch.com, host of the Uncovered podcast, a former federal and state Prosecutor, a Police Academy Director, a criminal defense lawyer, a former Republican Club President, and served on the Florida Judicial Nominating Commission for 12 years. This quote is from his post on X on 12/2/2024.
So, calmly and carefully check out this summary:
- The gun charge was ridiculous, but it certainly made big headlines and talking points for MAGA Republicans. He purchased it in 2018, lied on the application that he did not use drugs when he did. He owned it for 11 days, with no evidence he ever used it for anything. The reality is that the charge is pure nonsense. As Vance pointed out above, the charge would never have been made if his name wasn’t Hunter Biden.
- The tax evasion case was legitimate, but he paid the taxes and penalties immediately. Again, his personal issue with addiction, which he was working on to resolve, and his immediate repayment would not normally have meant the prosecution would continue; again, if his name wasn’t Hunter Biden.
- Trump and his associates have made it clear that among other items, they plan to go after all who oppose them. Kash Patel, whom Trump recently announced his choice as head of the FBI, has frequently singled out Hunter Biden as someone he plans to go after. With the loss of checks and balances on the federal government that Trump has managed, i.e., the Judicial branch with the conservative Supreme Court and their already unconstitutional decisions, such as giving a president immunity for certain vaguely described crimes committed while in office; the Legislative branch with Senate and House control; and, of course, the Executive branch controlled by Trump, Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy, and who knows who else at this point with Project 2025 as their playbook, the previously known guardrails set up by the founding fathers are gone. There is no longer any certainty that justice will be done.
Let us not forget that “During his first term in office, Trump granted 144 pardons. Those included a distant family member (his son-in-law’s father; not very distant, and now going to be appointed Ambassador to France by Trump) and some of his closest allies who committed crimes ranging from financial fraud to witness tampering and more.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/12/02/trump-pardoned-during-first-term/76705964007/
As well, Trump has hinted strongly that he plans to pardon the January 6 insurrectionists, who are most defintely violent criminals and a danger to our society to anyone who watched the TV coverage of that day.
President Biden was absolutely right to save Hunter, who has paid for his crimes already, even though Hunter is his son and he previously said he wouldn’t do this. But he didn’t know then what Hunter would be facing when he said that. We already know from Trump’s previous behavior that he is a vengeful person. He’s not going to stop Patel from going after Hunter Biden as one way to get back at our present President. Hunter is the most vulnerable because of the exceptionally poor choices he made in his past. No one will question that, but enough is enough, and there are more important issues and criminals to be addressed.
