Dancing Fish Chapbook

This chapbook published by Pudding House Publications, a well-known small press specializing in poetry, in November 2011 includes poems and text excerpts from the author’s forthcoming book, Voice of a Voyage: Dancing Fish, Tea in a Bombed-out Alley, and Other Memories of a Circumnavigation.

Dancing Fish - Doann HoughtonFrom 2001 to 2010, my husband and I sailed around the world in our sailboat, S/V Bali Ha’i III. The adventures, the people, the places, and the wildlife we encountered are beyond the covers of one book and certainly more than this collection can contain. Yet, the flavor of the larger voyage is here—a taste of what is to come—so enjoy this evocative discovery of places, people, and the natural world. In my writing, this journey is more than a metaphor, it becomes a vehicle for focusing on global issues as well as exciting adventures, both rewarding and tragic. What is a chapbook? With a history tracing back to the 1500s in England, today a chapbook is usually poetry, although fiction chapbooks are increasing in popularity, up to 40 pages of 8.5- by 11-inch paper folded in half, bound with a form of saddle stitching, around a central theme or concept, and inexpensive as compared to a hardcover-bound book. There are several interpretations of the derivation of the name, but the most accepted is that they were originally sold by peddlers, who were called chapmen, which evolved from cēap (not cheap) meaning trade in Old English.
